DBA

Database Administrator

The person who looks after a company's databases, keeping them running, backed up and secure.

Like the records clerk who runs the filing room: knows where every folder is, who may open it and that copies exist.

How it works

  • Installs, tunes and updates the database software.
  • Controls who can read or change which data.
  • Sets up backups and tests restores.
  • Small businesses usually rely on their software vendor, who runs the database behind the scenes.

How WILDCARD handles it

vCIO helps a business ask the right questions about who looks after its data.

  • A DBA restores a database after a failed update.
  • An accounting vendor hosts a client's data and handles its backups.
  • An auditor asks who has administrator access to the database.

A question owners ask

Do I need one?

If your software runs in the vendor's cloud, the vendor fills the role. Ask them in writing how often backups run and how a restore is tested.
