Quishing

A scam that hides a bad link inside a QR code.

Like a sealed instruction you cannot read until you follow it: you only see where it sends you after you have already gone.

How it works

  • QR codes show up in email, on posters, on parking meters and on stickers pasted over real ones.
  • Scanning opens a link on your phone, away from your computer's protection.
  • The link leads to a fake login or a malware download.
  • Check the address that shows before you open it.

How WILDCARD handles it

Phishing Training builds the habit of checking before scanning. Email Security filters the emails that carry them.

  • An email asks staff to scan a QR code to re-enrol in MFA.
  • A parking sticker covers the real payment code.
  • A flyer in the lobby offers a gift card for a quick survey.

A question owners ask

Are all QR codes dangerous? No. Treat them like links: read the address before opening, and avoid ones that ask you to sign in.
