BASH

Bourne Again Shell

A text-based command line used on Linux and older Mac computers to give instructions to the system.

Like talking to the machine through typed order slips: you write the instruction and it carries it out.

How it works

  • Commands can be saved as scripts and repeated.
  • Administrators use it to automate tasks.
  • Windows can run it through a built-in Linux layer.
  • Attackers use shells after breaking in.
  • An admin runs a script to copy files each night.
  • A server task is started from the command line.
  • A tool alerts on an unusual shell session.

A question owners ask

Do my staff need it?

No. It is for administrators and developers.
