WAF

Web Application Firewall

A filter in front of a website that blocks common web attacks before they reach it.

Like a screening desk at the entrance to an online shop that turns away anyone carrying a crowbar.

How it works

  • It reads each request to the website and blocks ones that look like attacks.
  • It covers common web flaws such as injected code.
  • It is often a switch inside a hosting or security service.
  • It does not replace keeping the site software updated.

What can go wrong (example scenario)

A small online shop ran an old plugin with a known hole. Within days of the flaw going public, automated attackers found the site and injected a hidden payment skimmer.

How WILDCARD handles it

Website Security puts a web application firewall in front of your site to filter attacks before they reach it.

  • An online store turns on a WAF to block automated attack traffic.
  • A clinic portal is placed behind a filtering service.
  • A web agency includes it in its hosting package.

A question owners ask

Does a WAF mean I can skip updates?

No. It reduces the risk while updates are pending, and the site still needs them.
